University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir, Wadoora, Sopore, Kashmir-193201 Abstract A key based on gross anatomical features of wood has been prepared for field/laboratory identification of popular timbers of Kashmir. Only such features which can be seen either with a naked eye or with a hand lens have been accounted for. Broad leaved timbers: Acer ceasium Wallich ex. Brandis, Aesculus indica L., Ailanthus altissima Miller, Alnus nitida (Spach) Endl., Betula utilis D. Don, Castanea sativa Mill., Catalpa bignonides Walt., Celtis australis L., Fraxinus excelsior L., Gleditsia tricanthos L., Juglans regia L., Morus alba L., Platanus orientalis L., Populus ciliata Wall., Prunus padus Hook, Quercus robur, Robinia pseudacacia L., Salix alba L., Ulmus wallichiana Planch. and among coniferous species Abies pindrow Spach, Cedrus deodara Loud, Cupressus torulosa Don., Picea simithiana Wall., Pinus wallichiana A.
