Milling Capacity and Energy Utilisation of Rice Mills in the State of Orissa Dash S.K., Mohanty V., Mohapatra M. Regional Extension Service Centre Machinery and Power, (Rice Milling) Oirssa University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneshwar Abstract A study was a conducted to evaluate the total milling capacity and energy utilisation of different types of rice mills operating in the stale of Orissa It was observed that there were 6120 hullers. 504 sheller-cum-hullers. 184 shellers and 168 modern/modernised rice mills operating in the state. The shellers, sheller-cum-hullers and modernised rice mills operated on an average for 12 hours/day and 320 days/year and milled about 48.5% of the total paddy production, leaving 51.5% paddy to be milled by traditional hullers. The studies on energy revealed that parboiling and milling sections of rice mills of the state consumed 1.682 x 1010 and 6.695x 10x MJ/year respectively Thus total energy requirement for the industry was 1.749x1010 MJ/year. The manual energy input was also calculated Such a study will help in determining the total energy consumption by the rice milling system of the country and lot better planning: of energy conservation and application of energy substitute technologies.
