Abstract

Water pumping wind mills located in different parts of Orissa were surveyed to know about their performance, technical back up and post installation problems. Out of the total 307 numbers of wind mills installed in the state, 66% were completely out of order due to different reasons such as use of poor quality materials and fabrication defects (1%), site and installation problems (8.5%), poor maintenance (43 6%), damage by natural calamities (9.8%) and other personal factors (2 9%). About 90% of the wind mill owners did not give proper attention for the post-installation measures of their wind mills. It was also observed that lack of satisfactory performance of most of the wind mills has declined people's interest towards this programme substantially in the past few years.
