Abstract Anticoagulants are drugs that prevent blood clots by acting on plasma coagulation factors. Anticoagulants mainly inhibit the appearance of fibrin filaments and contribute to the cessation of the growth of already formed thrombi, counteracting the effect of thrombin on fibrin. They also enhance the effect of endogenous fibrinolytic enzymes on blood clots.
