Abstract Empowerment of weaker sections of our society through their civil, socio-economic and cultural development is a big challenge which the government alone cannot meet. Here emerges the need of effective and efficient role of civil society. No doubt, a large number of schemes and programmes have been formulated and implemented for the development of weaker sections but their empowerment could not take place up to the expected level. If the civil society is committed, sincere, dedicated and devoted it can play a significant role in their empowerment.
