A Comparative Study on Health Problem (Oral Problems) with Associated Selected Factors Related to Smokeless Tobacco Consumption among Rural and Urban Women of Selected Area of Nabarangpur District, Odissa

Abstract

Wide dissemination of knowledge and awareness generation programs for all women belongs to rural area is essential to reduce this dreaded habit of smokeless tobacco consumption. urban people know much about the health hazards of tobacco and that merely is not sufficient to stop them from taking up or from continuing the habit. There is a need to develop multifactor tobacco quitting strategies focusing on early age intervention and covering the addict along with his surrounding environment. A comparative study on health problem (oral problem) with associated selected factors related to smokeless tobacco consumption among rural and urban woman of selected area of Nabarangpur district, odisha was conducted. The objective of the study were to assess the pattern of smokeless tobacco consumption and to compare the oral problems of both urban and rural woman with associated selected factors and also to identify the factors related to smokeless tobacco consumption and oral problems. The literature was reviewed from research and non-research literature and conceptual framework was derived from the health illness continuum model. In order to accomplish the objectives, non-experimental descriptive approach and non-experimental comparative survey design were adopted. The non probability convenience sampling technique was adopted to select 50 samples from rural and 50 sample from urban woman (14yr-56yr and above) taking smokeless tobacco. Observational schedule and questionnaire were the tools developed for collection of data. The content validity of tools was established by 7 experts in the field of nursing and community. Data obtained was analyzed in terms of objectives and by using both descriptive and inferential statistics. After analysis the present piece of study the presented data was evident that the obtained Z value (2.5) was much greater than table value of 1.96 at 0.05 level of significance. Hence the Null hypothesis is rejected. There was significant difference of mean between the oral problems of rural and urban smokeless tobacco consumers. It was inferred that the oral problems of rural smokeless tobacco consumers (woman) are higher than urban smokeless tobacco consumers.
