A Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Educational Intervention on knowledge and Attitude of Mothers Regarding Care of Children with Convulsion Disorder at Melmaruvathur

Abstract

Background

Convulsion disease among children from birth to adolescence is seen to be problematic almost throughout the world. Seizures are common in the pediatric age group and occur in 10% of children.

Objectives

To assess the educational intervention on knowledge and attitude of mothers regarding care of children with convulsion disorder.

Design

Quasi experimental design was used.

Setting

Melmaruvathur village at Kancheepuram district.

Participants

150mothers selected by fulfilling inclusion criteria.

Materials and Methods

Pretest was conducted to all the participants by using structured questionnaire for assessing knowledge and likert scale for assessment of attitude. Participants were given 30–45 minutes to complete the questionnaire. Educational intervention was given to all the participants. After 7 days post test was conducted by using the same questionnaire.

Results and discussion

The findings revealed that pretest 126(84%) mothers had inadequate knowledge and 24(16%) had moderately adequate knowledge. In post test 112 (74.67%) mothers had adequate knowledge and 32 (21.33%) had moderately adequate knowledge. In attitude pretest 120(80%) had poor attitude and 30 (20%) had fair attitude. In post test 126(84%) had good attitude and 20 (13.33%) had fair attitude about mother regarding care of children with convulsion disorder.

Conclusion

Effectiveness of educational intervention paired ‘t’ test showed that educational intervention was statistically significant at p<0.05 level of mothers regarding care of children with convulsion disorder. This study proved that the knowledge and attitude of mothers had markedly increased after the educational intervention.
