Attitude of Staff Nurses towards Organ Donation

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the attitude of staff nurses towards organ donation in a selected hospital in Trivandrum. A sample of 102 staff nurses was recruited using simple random sampling technique. Data was collected by using a standardized scale (Organ Donation Attitude Scale). The conceptual framework was adopted from Theory of Planned behavior by Ajzen. The majority of the nurses surveyed were belonged to age group less than 30 years (90.2%) with female nurses constituting 83.3% and male nurses constituting of only 16.7%. More than half (50.7%) of the nurses were diploma holders. The study has revealed that the most common source for organ donation awareness was through news paper (77.4%). The overall attitude with regard to organ donation was found to be positive 98.04% and a negative attitude prevailed among 1.96% of the subjects. There was no significant association between attitude and socio-demographic variables. The findings of the study demonstrated the need for Nurses working in ICU's and Casualty to be well educated and informed about the organ donation process and the specific roles played by them.
