Abstract

According to the World Bank's Report, more than 70 per cent of the world's poorest countries are reliant on tourism as a key economic growth engine. Acknowledging this, development assistance projects are increasingly using tourism as a means of fostering sustainable development. However, there is a paucity of information concerning appropriate engagement levels and policy guidance for development assistance in efforts to enhance tourism revenues for developing economies. There are difficulties in balancing the public sector role while maintaining a competitive private sector environment; also in balancing community needs and dealing with social issues. The present paper highlights that the knowledge management will promote sustainable tourism initiatives along with development of assistance resources. It will achieve the development of tourism by facilitating information exchange, knowledge applications, training programmes and cooperation between public, private and government sectors. It is suggested that this be done with core values of transparency, collaboration, accuracy, user-friendliness, easy accessibility and clearly defined responsibilities.
