Performance of commercial banks in current scenario in India Dr. Jha Dilip Kumar Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya, A Central University, Chhattisgarh, India, jhadilip.ggv@gmail.com Online published on 17 April, 2017. Abstract Profitability and efficiency are the two goals for which commercial banks are striving hard to achieve in this competitive era. This is more visible during globalization and post-globalization era. Every commercial bank viz. Public sector, Private sector and foreign sector bank competes and tries to come on top and rule the market. The present study attempts to understand the relative performance of commercial banks on the basis of various parameters like Branch Productivity Ratios, Labour Productivity Ratio and Profitability Ratio, which have been used by the economists, planners and policy makers for the assessment purposes, from time to time. The study concludes that in majority of the parameters foreign sector banks are leading from the front, followed by the private sector bank, while public sector bank is at last in the race in terms of profitability and efficiency. The paper argues that the internal and external challenges, which have hindered the performance of Public Sector Banks needs to be addressed on priority basis. Hence, the government has to look back to revise the banking policy in order to improve the performance of the Public Sector Banks in this new and open competitive environment.
