Abstract

Today, most of the cities especially metropolitan cities in a developing country like India, are beset with the problems of urban sprawl, unplanned growth, inadequate supply of serviced land for public purposes, especially housing, speculative holding of urban land, illegal settlements and slums. The major reason which can be attributed to this is the ineffectiveness of the land management policies, legislation and governance to coordinate the fast pace of urban growth and affecting the socio-economic development as evident in the past few decades. The inaccessibility of the poor and the deprived ones to the housing and other basic physical and social infrastructure highlights the blemished democratic system in the country which is founded on the principle of equitable distribution of resources including land. The paper attempts to analyse the major lacunae and flaws responsible for the inefficiency and ineffectiveness in the land management of the Indian metropolitan cities in bringing out a sustainable development of Indian cities with equity for all, through a case study of Jaipur city, the first ever planned city of modern India, founded in 1727 and also popularly known as the ‘Pink City of India’.
