Trends in Women Work Participation in Punjab (India)

Abstract

One of the unusual features of India's labour market was the labour force participation of women remain stagnant for a long time and Punjab is no exception. The recent census reports shows a disturbing trend of labour force participation rate which dropped to 13.9 percent in 2011 from 18.7 percent in 2001 and the decline is noticed especially among urban female work participation. The studies found that participation of women in the working force is low and mostly concentrated in the agriculture and cultivation in the rural areas. But recently, few studies have come up on the basis of census 2001 and 2011 data. This being the backdrop shows the analysis of women participation in the working force of Punjab level that there is a variation in the women's WPR across the districts of state.
