Abstract

A special economic zone is a specially delineated ‘duty free’ region within the national boundary of a country. The concept of SEZ has been passed through a long journey of development. The concept of Special Economic Zone in the present form as we know today was given to the world by ‘The People Republic of China’ in 1979. Taking inspiration from the luminous success of Chinese SEZ, the Government of India has introduced the SEZ in EXIM policy 2000. The SEZ Act has been passed in May, 2005 and it was supported with rules in February, 2006. There has been seen a flood in approvals of SEZs in the country. Within a period of half decade the total number of SEZ has reached up to 1000. Therefore, it is a matter of concern for the planners and researcher. The present paper has been taken an account on the evolution, and its implications in the country. Some suggestions have also been given in the present study.
