Structural Aspects of Persian-English Code-Mixing Moradi Hamzeh Research Scholar, Department of English and Cultural Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh, India Online published on 11 June, 2014. Abstract Bilinguals manifest a capacity of producing and perceiving sentences which contain elements of both their languages. We refer to such intra-sentential language alternation as code-mixing. Code-mixing is defined as the practice of moving between variations of languages in various social contexts. It is the alternate of two or more languages or language varieties in the same conversation or utterance. Code- mixing has been investigated from three main perspectives include: structural linguistic, sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic perspective, which in this research study we will focus on the structural linguistic perspective. The present study will investigate the occurrence of code-mixing in Persian-English bilingual conversation, so that it reveals facts and the peculiar features of this process occurring in two typological different languages. It gives a clear description of the types and the patterns of mixing of both languages, i.e. Persian and English in Persian-English bilingual conversations with its peculiar features and revealing the levels of switching and the syntactic and morphosyntactic constraints on this communicative linguistic process. Top Keywords Code–switching, code-mixing, structural linguistics. Top | |
