Subscription Usage of Academic Applications of Social Network Sites by the University Students Subramani R. Assistant Professor, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Periyar University, Salem, Tamil Nadu, India Online published on 5 July, 2014. Abstract One of the popular applications of new media is the Online Social Networking. Social Networking involves the use of internet to connect users with their friends, family and acquaintances. The new media domain has its own illustrious characteristics and functions. With the exponential growth of new media and the usage of social networking sites, the present paper envisioned to study the objectives of 1) Examine the academic use of social media applications by university students, 2) Study the subscription usage of various academic applications of social media by the university students 3) Study the relationship between the various branch of students and subscription usage of the academic applications of the social media. This study comprehensively draws the samples from the premier state funded universities of Tamil Nadu. The population of the study consisted of thirteen major discipline of students in Doctoral, M Phil and Master Branches. The sample size of the study comprised of 482 students selected through convenient sampling technique. The structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The findings of the study revealed that language and finance branch students predominately subscribed to e-journals, e-books, e-magazines, and e-lectures and related academic applications from social media than the other branch students.
