Emperor's Edicts Revisited: A study of Ashokan Inscription Choudhury Pravash K. Department of History, University of Delhi, New Delhi, India Online published on 5 July, 2014. Abstract Earliest deciphered inscriptions of India belong to late 4th century BCE. Ashokan inscription written in Brāhmī and Kharōshthī found distributed across the varied regions of the subcontinent. Our understanding of origin and development of earliest deciphered scripts remain enigmatic. Similarly, its wider purpose and practical utility, although variously argued, remain problematic.
