Abstract Face to face individual communication utilizes a range of techniques including facial signals and expressions. It would be advantageous to make use of extra natural communication means in human computer interaction and ultimately computer supported human communication. The automatic identification of natural facial expressions is an essential pace towards this goal. The research was done using four different approaches with input sets from various image databases to achieve this goal. Among the four approaches, it is found that the fourth approach which uses Gabor wavelet transforms and Gabor filters yields a better performance of 96.73% with five expressions and 94.8% with all the six natural expressions.
