Abstract

The present research work is a comprehensive evaluation of irrigation groundwater quality from various regions of Rasipuram Taluk. The physicochemical parameters investigated were conductivity, Ph and total dissolved solids, as well as the chemical parameters such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, bi-carbonate, chloride, potassium, iron, sulphate, nitrate, fluoride and calculated parameters (including residual sodium carbonate, sodium absorption ratio, Kelley's ratio and soluble sodium percent). These parameters were used to evaluate the suitability of groundwater for irrigation purpose. The majority of problems have been identified in the Rasipuram Taluk, particularly those characterised by scarcity of water resources. The problems related to irrigation water quality identified due to the conditions of the water supply systems, source water pollution and in particular the pollution of groundwater with manmade and natural origins in hard rock aquifers. 22% of groundwater samples are unsuitable for irrigation purposes according to Sodium Absorption Ratio, Kelley's ratio, Residual sodium carbonate and Soluble Sodium Percent.
