Abstract This experimental work summarizes the development of self compacting mortar for the ferrocement form works. Characteristic study on self compacting mortar with four types of admixtures namely water reducer and super plasticizer were conducted. Optimum dosage, flow character of the admixtures and compressive strength at 3, 7, 14 and 28 days were tested. Ferrocement channels of 1m length for the selected mortar strength were casted by varying the shear span to depth ratio and volume fraction of reinforcement. The formwork system which exhibited the highest ductile behaviour and moment carrying ability were tested under two point loading. The result indicate that the ultimate strength increases in the volume fraction of wire mesh and mortar strength sand decreases with the increase in shear span to depth ratio.
