Abstract

Living on the streets is the ultimate form of marginalization in terms of housing needs. Unfortunately, for thousands of migrant workers in Mumbai, that is a reality. This paper attempts to explicate the experiences of everyday violence as faced by the migrant workers living on spaces adjacent to the streets. Based on an ongoing empirical study, this paper brings out the narratives of different types of migrant labourers engaged in informal work in Mumbai. Most of such workers live on meagre wages and are unable to afford a proper and secure rented housing arrangement due to which they are forced to live on the streets. Their life stories suggest that life on the streets is fraught with violence-both subtle and blatant, and it requires tremendous energy and enterprise in negotiating on a day to day basis, so as to gain respite from this violence. Life on the streets signifies constant trade-offs in existence for its inhabitants in terms of meeting their basic needs for survival and striving to lead the life with dignity. The very act of survival on the streets thus becomes an endeavour to resist or cope with violence for a number of migrant workers. As a result, many internalize this kind of dual violence which gets reflected in their dispositions, social relationships and everyday life. However, despite being an exploitative and violent space, for some workers, city can serve as a liberating space and provide them with anonymity of identity and freedom to work, instilling in them a sense of self-confidence and awareness about their rights.
