Abstract

A new heterocyclic compound namely N-(6-aminobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)acetamide (ABTB) was synthesized, and characterized using FT-IR, H1NMR, C13NMR spectra. The corrosion inhibition efficiency of the synthesized compound for mild steel in 1N HCl was investigated using potentiodynamic polarization and AC impedance techniques. Surface morphology was studied using FT-IR and SEM techniques. The corrosion inhibition effect decreased with respect to time of immersion and different temperature. The maximum inhibition efficiency was obtained above 98% in 1N HCl for an immersion time of 5 hours and at a temperature of 40°C. The inhibitor gets adsorbed on the mild steel by physisorption mechanism. The adsorption of the inhibitor on mild steel in 1N HCl obeys Langmuir and Temkin adsorption isotherms. Potentiodynamic polarization studies suggested that the inhibitor acts as a mixed type. AC impedance study indicates that the charge transfer process controls the corrosion of mild steel.
