Abstract Most of the sensor nodes are prepared with non-rechargeable battery. So, life span of the wireless sensor networks is very low when compared with other networks. To increase the lifetime of the WSN, the energy saving optimization technique called Power Proficient Opportunistic Routing (PPOR) is proposed in this paper. The PPOR prioritize the sensor nodes by using distance to sink, residual energy and bandwidth parameters. The sensor node with highest priority is selected as the relay node to forward the data towards sink or Base station. This opportunistic routing algorithm selects the relay node based on their current energy level. The main advantage of PPOR is the relay sensor nodes with minimum residual energy never selected to forward the data. The simulation results show that the proposed routing algorithm PPOR reduce the energy consumption to increase the lifetime of the network.
