Abstract

As quoted by Alvin Toffler (1990), “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn”, learning become lifelong and consistent updating of skills and knowledge are vital in knowledge economy. The world is experiencing dynamic changes in all aspects of life catalyzed by rapid advancement in technology and emerging new models of economics. Cognizant of economic revolution provide different stages of economic transformation and changes in dominant factor in each transformation with shrinkage in life span. As analyzed by Chuanqi (1999) the stone tool age had around 2.5 m years with hunting and tool making skills as dominant factors for human success, followed by agrarian revolution that last around 5800 years, in which land and labor played as key success factors, third stage emerged through industrial revolution where additional key factor emerged in the way of machines that transition last for 210 years and currently we are living in the knowledge age from 1970 that demands high level of human skill where information is key success factor. According to ESRC report (2005) “Economic success is increasingly based on upon the effective utilization of intangible assets such as knowledge, skills and innovative potential as the key resource for competitive advantage. The term knowledge economy” is used to describe this emerging economic structure”.
