Genetic variability for allogamic traits in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.)

Abstract

Eighteen pollen parents of barley were grown in a randomized block design with three replications to study the variability in anther length (mm), anther extrusion (anthers/spikelet) and pollen viability within anther (%). The anther length varied from 2.06 (RD2503) to 3.31 mm (BH331). BH85, BH326, Clipper and PL172 had anther length of more than 3.00 mm. BH 342, the check variety had the highest anther extrusion of 2.21 anthers/spikelet, while PL 172 recorded the lowest anther extrusion of 0.11 anthers/spikelet. The other pollen parents having desirable anther extrusion were BH 326 (1.10 anthers/spikelet) and BH 75 (1.04 anthers/spikelet). The range of viable pollen after 1/2 an hour was from 98.42 to 100.00 per cent which reduced to 80.24 to 89.45 per cent after 4 hours at temperature from 19.2°C to 23.8°C and relative humidity 71 to 75 per cent.
