Abstract The aim of mechanical root canal preparation is to remove organic tissue and debris from the root canal and to shape the canal to allow effective cleaning and filling. Canal-shaping is a critical aspect ofendodontic treatment because it influences the outcome of the subsequent phases of canal irrigation, filling, and the overall success of the treatment itself. Instrumentation of curved root canals is still a challenge even for skilled and experienced operators. Stainless steel files tend to straighten the canal which results in alterations of the apical anatomy, such as zipping or perforations. The impact of canal transportation on the clinical outcome of root canal treatment is discussed.
