Abstract

Edentulousness is on the decline with the emergence of dental implants as the gold standard for tooth replacement. Osseointegration is becoming increasingly routine in the rehabilitation of partially or fully edentulous patients. Beyond doubt, implants and the appliances that are fabricated on top of the implants are wonders of engineering but unfortunately cannot be designed to be maintenance free. Thus the success story hovers around the fact that local factors contribute majorly for the health of the implant. In today's world, care needed for dental implants has probably become more important than that required for the natural teeth. So a well taken care implant with optimum maintenance can be spared from turning into an ailing implant.

Therefore this article concentrates on the paramount that the dental implant team understands the similarities and distinctions between the dental implant and the natural tooth. Subsequently, basic guidelines can be provided for re-call, maintenance and diligent patient homecare of the implant to ensure its long-term health.
