Abstract The patient's mouth is a challenging environment in which complete control of the environment of the operative site is essential during restorative dental procedures. For the patient's comfort and safety, and for the operator's access and clear visibility, saliva, as well as water introduced during instrumentation, must be removed from the mouth. Control of the oral environment extends to the gingiva surrounding the teeth being restored. The gingiva must be displaced to make a complete impression and sometimes even to pennit completion of the preparation and cementation. Occasionally, it is necessary to permanently alter the contours of the gingival tissue around the teeth or of the edentulous ridge to ensure a better, long lasting result of the fixed restorations.
