Abstract

Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a reactive, non-neoplastic (although hyperplastic) inflammatory lesion of gingival tissues that is considered to arise from the periosteal and periodontal membrane. POF predominantly affects females between their second and third decades of the life. The tumor is usually located in the maxillary anterior region and is usually asymptomatic. Adequate surgical excision is the treatment of choice. The prognosis is fairly good although recurrence rates up to 20% have been stated in the literature.

A case of POF in a 68 year old female patient is presented here. The lesion was asymptomatic in nature, firm in consistency, pinkish in color and was located between maxillary central incisors. The size and shape of the tumor appeared it to look like a natural tooth atthe first sight.
