Abstract

Evaluation of Validity of Interocclusal Wax Record and Gothic Arch Tracing methods of determining the Centric Relation Radiographically.

Purpose

Attaining an accurate Centric Relation (CR) record is important for development of an occlusion that is in harmony with the entire stomatognathic system. Present study was done to identify spatial relationships within temporomandibular joint in edentulous subjects when interocclusal wax record (Method-1) and Gothic arch tracing (Method-2) methods were used to determine CR. This study evaluated positional change of condyle in glenoid fossa and changes in superior, anterior and posterior joint spaces for the two methods.

Materials & Methods

The study was conducted on 25 edentulous patients with Class-I ridge relationship. CR was recorded for each patient by interocclusal wax record and Gothic arch tracing (using Hight Tracers) methods. Two lateral cephalogram radiographs were taken for each patient. After tracing the radiographs superior, anterior and posterior joint spaces were measured.

Results

Association between three types of readings in Method-2 was relatively stronger than those in Method-1. Inference drawn is that Graphic Method is relatively more accurate than Interocclusal Wax Record method.

Conclusion

Many methods are capable of producing acceptable results when recording CR. Main difficulty with any technique lies in inducing the patient to close mandible in CR and to make registration with as little pressure as possible. Present study indicates use of Gothic arch tracing method for establishing CR because it is more accurate and precise as compared to Interocclusal Wax Record method.
