Abstract

The term dilaceration was first used by Tomes in 1848, and it is defined as a deviation or bend in the linear relationship of a crown of a tooth to its root or vice-versa. Tooth dilaceration might present in various ways including non-eruption of the affected tooth, prolonged retention of the primary predecessor tooth, and apical fenestration of the labial cortical plate or it can be asymptomatic. Although most examples are idiopathic, a number of teeth with dilacerations appear to arise after an injury that displaces the calcified portion of the tooth germ, & the remainder of the tooth is formed at an abnormal angle. Injury- related dilaceration more frequently affects the anterior dentition & often creates both a functional and a cosmetic dental problem. It can range from a simple white or yellow brown discoloration to crown dilacerations, crown duplication, root dilacerations, root duplication, odontome like malformation, partial or complete arrest of root formation, sequestration of the permanent tooth germ or disturbances in the eruption of the permanent teeth.

This case report presents a case of a 19-year old girl who reported to the clinic with a chief complaint of discoloured & malformed tooth in the upper left front teeth region since childhood. The patient was asymptomatic & complaint of no pain or swelling in that region. The only complaint was her aesthetics as she was going to get married within few months. After a successful root anal treatment of the tooth a fibre post was placed in the canal considering aesthetic requirements and crown built up with composite resin.
