Abstract

Dental caries is one of the most common oral diseases in childhood (Brazil, 2004). Its etiology is multifactorial and related to an imbalance between the tooth structure and oral environment, of which microbiota, diet and host are responsible for the disease initiation and progression (Shaw, Glenwright, 1989). As many parents are aware that the sugars cause tooth decay, they commonly relate this solely to consumption of sweets and biscuits. They are often unaware of the hidden, added sugars in many foods and drinks including pediatric liquid medicines. The present study was conducted to determine the endogenous pH and erosive potential of six most commonly prescribed groups of pediatric medicines used by children. Six samples from each group were taken. pH was measured using digital pH meter and titratable acidity by titrometer. Lowest pH was found in antiasthamatics and multivitamins. Highest titratable acidity was present in multivitamins and antitussive.
