Abstract

Aim of The Study

The purpose was to assess orthodontic treatment need in a population group of North India.

Materials and Method

The study was conducted on a sample population of 110 school going students aged 12-15years to assess the need for orthodontic treatment using both Dental Health Component (DHC) and Aesthetic Component(AC) of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN).

Results

According to Angle's classification, 74.5percent of all malocclusions belonged to ClassI, 22.7percent to ClassII, and only 1.8percent to ClassIII. Using Dental Health Component, 38.2% showed no need for orthodontic treatment, 22.7% had a moderate/borderline need while 39.1% had a definite need for treatment, of which, crossbites accounted for a high proportion of the population. The Aesthetic Component revealed that 81.8% of the sample exhibited no or slight need for treatment, 10.9% demonstrated moderate to borderline need and 7.3% proved to have a definite need for orthodontic treatment.

Conclusions

A baseline data to plan future orthodontic services in the region and for worldwide comparisons was obtained using IOTN.
