Abstract

Aim

The aim and objectives of this study was to correlate the quantum of these bacteria in relation to presence or absences of dental caries. To evaluate the levels of mutans streptococci in children with dental caries in comparison to their mothers.

Methods and Material

A total of 50 children with and without dental caries and their mothers were taken for the study. Group-1 consisted of 25 children with dental caries and their mothers. Group-2 consisted of 25 children without dental caries and their mothers. Sheep blood agar and mitis salivaris agar with bacitracin and 20% sucrose medium were used for growth of mutans streptococci colonies.

Statistical Analysis Used

Descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, Spearman's ρ correlation coefficient

Results

Number of colonies found in mother and child pair showed a positive correlation; that is, as the number of CFU's of S. mutans increased in mother's saliva and plaque their child had increased number of CFU's of S. mutans.

Conclusions

The biochemical tests on S. mutans isolates matched between mother and child pair except in 1 case. A positive correlation was observed between dft/DMFT and number of CFU's of S. mutans in saliva and plaque of child as well as in mother in group-1 and group-2. Bacterial count in plaque sample was significantly higher (P<0.00) than in saliva sample in both groups. S.mutans in high numbers are a definite risk factor for Dental Caries irrespective of age.
