Bcause the cause and inter-relationships of many TMD's are often complex, the initial therapy should preferably be non-invasive. Occlusal appliances offer such therapy which temporarily improves the functional relationships of the Temporomandibular system. However, care must be taken to construct an appliance that will be both compatible with the soft tissues and provide the alteration of the function needed to eliminate the cause. However, high emphasis is laid on thorough history, examination and diagnosis.
