Abstract

Aim

To evaluate the effect of tooth brushing on the surface roughness of composite resin, Cention N, glass ionomer cement, silver amalgam by using a dentifrice and a customized automated brushing machine under a profilometer.

Materials and Method

A total of 40 specimens (6mm × 2mm) were prepared from four different restorative materials (n = 10 from each group): Group 1: Tetric N Ceram (Ivoclar Vivadent), Group 2: Cention N (Ivoclar vivadent), Group 3: Silver amalgam (DPI), Group 4: Type II glass ionomer cement (GC). Baseline profilometric read out was taken for each group after which the samples were subjected to tooth brushing using a customized automated tooth brushing machine for sixty minutes using Colgate Total (Colgate Palmolive, India). Change in surface roughness was recorded after brushing using a profilometer and the values were compared across the groups.

Statistical analysis

One Way Analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by post hoc Tukey's Test Results: Statistically significant differences (p<0.05) were observed in the values of surface roughness (Ra) among (Group 1, group2 and group 4) whereas group 3 (silver amalgam) had no significant change in surface roughness (P> 0.05).

Conclusion

Within the limitations of the study, significant change in surface roughness was observed in type II glass ionomer cement followed by nanohybrid composite resin and Cention N. Insignificant change in surface roughness was observed in silver amalgam.
