Effectiveness of structured teaching programme regarding risk factors leading to obesity and its prevention among adolescents

Abstract

Introduction

Obesity is caused by an imbalance between energy consumed and energy expended with excess energy stored as fat, having numerous health consequences. Genetic factors influence the susceptibility of a given child to an obesity conducive environment. Environmental factors, lifestyle preferences and cultural environment seem to play major role in the prevalence of obesity worldwide.

Aim

The present study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme regarding risk factors leading to obesity and its prevention among adolescents.

Materialand Methods

Quantitative research approach and quasi-experimental pre test post test design was used for study. Study setting includes Eastwood lntemational Public School and Guru Harkrishan Public High School, Ludhiana, Punjab. Sample size was 60 adolescents, 30 in each experimental and controlgroup.

Results

Results ofstudy revealed thatin control group mean pre test knowledge score was 12. 63 andin experimental group mean pre test knowledge score was 13.27. In control group mean post test knowledge score was 13.60 and in experimental group mean post test knowledge score was 20.57. The difference between the post test mean knowledge score of adolescents of experimental group regarding risk factors leading to obesity and its prevention was found significantly higher than post testmean knowledge score ofcontrolgroup atp <0. 05 level.

Conclusion

The conclusion of the study is that structured teaching programme is effective in enhancing the level of knowledge regarding risk factors leading to obesity and its prevention among adolescents.
