Attitude of B.sc. nursing 1st year students towards nursing profession: A desceriptive study

Abstract

Introduction

Nursing is a dynamic profession which is both an art and science. Nurses work in a large variety of specialties where they work independently and as a part of team to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care. Nurs1ng profess10n has defined code ofeth1cs, based on well-defined body ofknowledge and skills. But there is marked change in attitude, behavior and structure ofnursing profession. Students are generally knowledgeable about nursing but are reluctant to pursue nursing as a carrier. Nursing must promote itself as an attractive, respectable and well-paid profession and seek to fulfill the ideal career expectations ofstudents.

Aim

This study was carried out to assess the attitude of B. Sc. Nursing 1st year students towards nursing profession and relationship with selected sociodemographic profile.

Material and Methods

A quantitative survey approach was used to carry out descriptive des1gn to select 100 B. Sc. nurs1ng students from various nurs1ng colleges of district Faridkot through convenient sampling technique to collect data by using self structured questionnaire.

Results

The results revealed that socio-demographically most of subjects with mean age ±SD of 14.45 ± 28.81 were females, with more than 80% marks in high school belonged to rural community and only 43% were having prior knowledge regarding nursing. The results showed that 57% students were having positive attitude towards their profession.. The gender of student, high school percentage, parents education level and reason behind joining nursing showed highly significant association with attitude of B. Sc. Nursing 1st year students at p>0.05.

Conclusion

It is concluded that maximum students of B. Sc. Nursing 1st year were having positive attitude towards their profession. The female students, educated parents, high school percentage and reason to join nursing has great impact on attitude of B. Sc. nursing students towards their profession.
