Rising temperature in the changing environment: A serious threat to plants

Abstract

Rising temperature all over the world with climate change has resulted in global warming. It may cause severe changes in quality of air, water and soil. High temperature is now being recognized as a potential agricultural threat for the world. It affects physiological and biochemical changes in plants initiating from seed germination to plant growth and development, subsequently leading to reduction in economic yield of crops. There is a need of developing approaches to induce thermotolerance mechanisms in plants using physiological and molecular approaches to mitigate the adverse effects of high temperature on photosynthesis, respiration, water relations and crop productivity. This study focuses on our understanding on the plants ’ physiological and biochemical responses under high temperature due to climate change and gives an insight into some scientific approaches to modulate plants ’ responses for hightemperature tolerance.
