Abstract

Condition assessment of HV apparatus is a topic of interest worldwide. It is used in asset management and, at times, in post failure analysis by insurance companies. Condition assessment normally accomplished by analyzing parameters of the electromechanical structure of HV apparatus. This calls for various diagnostic tests. Power transformer in HV/EHV transmission system is one of the main and costliest apparatus that is monitored for condition assessment. Condition monitoring calls for diagnostic tests. These tests are done either off-line or on-line or both. They include measurements of power factor and capacitance, partial discharge, thermal profile of the transformer and analysis of solid & liquid insulation as well as leakage reactance, exciting current, and sweep frequency response analysis. These measurements, normally, complement each other, providing valuable information. The proposed paper is an attempt to describe the aspects of condition monitoring of power transformers involving on-line & off-line measurements. It explains the significance & importance of diagnostic tests. It further explains the present solution offered by the Doble for monitoring of power transformers.
