Abstract

Eritrea, located in the horn of Africa, is surrounded by northeast and east by Red Sea, on the southwest by Djibouti, on the south by Ethiopia and west by Sudan. Its geographical area is approximately 123,300 square kilometers (Eritrea Basic Education Statistics, 2002). On the other hand, the World Bank data reveal that its geographical area is118, 000 square kilometers. So there is little controversy about its area. In the absence of population census (now under way), its population figure also varies. As per the report of Eritrea Basic Education Statistics, 2002, its population was 3.2 million with average density of population 29 persons per square kilometer. On the World Bank data on population shows that in 2002, population was 4 million. After the population census the picture will be clear in this regard. The Red Sea coast is extended with more than 1000 kilometers with more than 350 islands spread over to an area of 1500 Square kilometers. The country is having six provinces/regions, locally known as Zoba, 57 sub-Zobas/sub-regions and 2606 villages.
