Abstract Language plays an important role in deciding the status in the family and society. This paper looks at the role of language and how its knowledge changes one's position within the family, in the society and the country and then even in the world. Beginning with the plight of the protagonist in the movie English Vinglish, the paper explores the use and role of English over time and space. Some of the major reasons behind the wide acceptability of English are also raised. The widespread nature of English and its neutral status have helped in the spread of this language across the globe.
