A Glance at Love in Surrealist Poetry Aubert E. Professor, Sophia Girls’ College (Autonomous), Ajmer, Rajasthan Email id: elveraubert1954@gmail.com Online published on 21 April, 2018. Abstract The paper deals with the surrealistic element is the two love poems of Paul Eluard: Mon Amour and Je Cache les Sombre Trésors.. The paper attempts to understand surrealism and its tenets briefly. The Surrealists, influenced by Freudian analysis, attempted to express in art and literature the workings of the unconscious mind, the libido, id or the ‘other self’. Then they proceeded to synthesise these workings with the conscious mind, the ego or ‘self’. This synthesis can be observed in the Surrealist poets’ treatment of love, in particular the love poems of Paul Eluard. All Surrealists exalt love as the archetypal surrealist act because it brings about the seemingly impossible fusion of the ‘self’ or ego, with the ‘other self’ or id. It is a perpetual challenge to the life, denying equation of the useful with the good. Thus it is the supreme manifestation of the ‘Pleasure Principle’. The paper analyses both the poems in this light. Surrealism may seem to be less pronounced in literary movements today, its influence is still felt; its poems still necessary to be studied. The revolutionary movement of Surrealism pushed the boundaries in art and Literature, allowing for freeing thought and endless possibilities. The Surrealist poets truly utilised the Parisian Bohemian ideas of love, portraying these in a style that was revolutionary as well as beautiful and the paper attempts to understand the same.
