The Positive Role of Patriarchs: A Study of Male Characters in Rama Mehta's Inside the Haveli and Lakshmi Kannan's The Glass Bead Curtain Rawal Shruti Assistant Professor, Department of English, Sophia Girls’ College, Ajmer, Rajasthan, India Email id: shrutivipul@gmail.com Online published on 21 April, 2018. Abstract The paper is a miniature attempt to prove that the gross generalisation of blaming the males for the miseries of the females is incorrect. There are numerous instances where a positive role by the male figures, in the form of a father, brother, husband or even a son, has made a significant contribution to the lives of women. There have been many whose dreams have been moulded by their teachers of the opposite gender. The paper doesn't intend to glorify them but in the light of recent post-feminism brings a fresh perspective. The paper endeavours to study two novels: Rama Mehta's Inside the Haveli and Lakshmi Kannan's The Glass Bead Curtain. Both the novels are by women writers, who have been brought up and educated in good families. Their novels hence reflect the positive male characters that, though are patriarchs and live in the traditional conservative society, still stand by the women in a very subtle and clever manner. The paper's primary focus is to analyse the male characters, the relationship they share with the female protagonist and their role in the lives of the female.
