Community Education in the New Development Paradigm– An Overview Tapan Neeta, Assistant Professor of Economics School of Studies in Economics, Vikram University Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, Email: tapaneeta@yahoo.co.in. Abstract The development paradigm has been undergoing many shifts over the years and so has the issue of population in the context of development. Earlier population was treated as number and so the dilemma revolved round the controversy of “Population OR Development”. The new theories of human development lay down particular emphasis of the model of empowerment, participatory approach and alternative strategies of development. This paradigmatic shift has reiterated the importance of age-old concept of community education. The concept of community education is quite old but it assumes special significance in the new era of network relations and inherently promotes social interaction and generates social capital. This paper thus, attempts to assess the growing importance and role of community education in the new development paradigm and also tries to identify the areas of intervention. The paper tries to sketch out how the goals of holistic development can be achieved through alternative development strategies such as community education, which inherently apply the model of “Population and Development”.
