Abstract In the present study, numerical simulations of three dimensional nonlinear thermal problem is conducted using Altair Hyper Weld Friction Stir Welding Virtual experimental software module for the butt joint of AA6061 material plates. The model predictions were confirmed with experimental data from previous studies. The simulation results from Altair Hyperweld are in good agreement with that of experimental results. It is also observed that the temperature field in the FSW process is symmetrically distributed along the welding line. Virtual experimental data indicates that peak temperatures are higher on the advancing side than the retreating side during the weld process. Friction stir welding simulation performed on Altair's Hyper Weld FSW has opened new skyline of modeling and simulation of joining processes.
