Abstract The primary goal of this research is to assess the role and operation of professional organizations in facilitating the continuing professional development (CPD) of librarians in universities in Kerala. Recognizing the vital importance of continuous skill and knowledge development for librarians' career advancement, this study encompasses 262 qualified librarians actively employed in various university libraries across Kerala. A stratified random sampling technique selected 153 participants from four university libraries. This research aims to evaluate various aspects, including members' satisfaction levels regarding association activities, the frequency and motives behind participating in CPD initiatives, the satisfaction levels with CPD programs, and the effectiveness of these associations in addressing technological and professional skill needs. Preliminary results suggest that participants hold a moderate view of the activities and programs organized by professional associations. However, further investigation is required to assess these associations' impact on the professional development of librarians in Kerala more precisely. In summary, this research underscores the significance of professional organizations in librarians' continuous skill and knowledge development. It highlights the need for more in-depth assessment and enhancement of these organizations.
