Abstract A siphon is a conduit that conveys liquid from one point to another point of lower elevation after raising the liquid to a higher elevation at an intermediate point. Siphons in hydropower plants have many advantages relating to automatic operation, control of headwater level within the close limits, omission of gates at the inlet, and reduced intake of silt. SHP projects widely use siphons as penstock/turbine intakes and spillways in many countries like the USA, U.K., Russia and China. There are many low head SHP projects in India where siphon intake turbines are used, but no documentation is reported on their performance. Even after several advantages, the siphon is not accepted widely in Indian SHP projects. The paper aims to check-the financial viability of siphon against the conventional structures in the SHP Projects. This paper has-studied the use of siphon as penstock/turbine intake and spillway substitute for the conventional intake and spillway. The installed capacity of these SHP projects under study varies from 3 to 12MW. Based on the design, cost estimate, and life cycle cost analysis, it was found that fifty percent of analyzed-siphon penstock/turbine intakes worked out to be cheaper in the range of 0.9% to 32.1%. Siphon spillways were worked out to be expensive as compared to conventional spillways. It was also noted that there are no set criteria for selecting siphon penstock/turbine intake and siphon spillways for SHP projects. The application of siphon as penstock/turbine intake and spillway is decided based on economic and other reasons. Top Keywords Siphon, SHP Projects, Siphon Intake, Siphon Turbine, Siphon Spillway.
