Abstract

Actinomycosis disease (Lumpy Jaw) is a chronic disease characterized by abscess formation, tissue fibrosis, draining sinuses caused by non spore forming anaerobic bacterial species Actinomyces bovis. The present communication deals with a case of 21/2 year old crossbred cow which was presented to Veterinary Teaching Hospital with reduced appetite, granular mandibular swelling, mild dyspnoea, pyrexia and painful mastications. On clinical examination of mandibular swelling revealed sticky, honey like fluid containing minute, hard & yellow white granules. On microscopic examination of tissue sample revealed sulpher granules as rosettes which were simply separate colonies of actinomyces bovis. These colonies were surrounded by zone of radially arranged club shaped structure. Beyond the radiating club there was a zone of neutrophils surrounded by outer area of mononuclear cells. When the smear was stained with gram stain it revealed presence of large number of Gram positive filaments of organism. This confirmed the presence of Actinomyces bovis. For the treatment the abscess was flushed with metronidazole & povidone Iodine containing Dress solution & a gauze of tincture Iodine was inserted regularly for three days to destroy pyogenic membrane. Also Amoxycillin and Cloxacilline containing Intamox @ 15mg/kg b.wt and Melonex @ 0.2mg/kg b.wt by Intramuscular route were injected for 7 days. By this treatment the swelling was suppressed gradually. On the basis of clinical examination, lesion and presence of Gram positive organisms the case was diagnosed as Actinomycosis.
