With this issue in your hands, The Indian Cow a scientific and economic quarterly journal entered in 2^nd year. Coincidently, this issue was prepared during Krishna Janmashtami, the birth date of Lord Krishna who devoted his early life in the management of cows. He was famous as “Gwala” and he felt proud to be called as Gwala means cow husbandry man. He used to graze the cowherds at the bank of holy river Jamuna. This issue is being dedicated to Lord Krishna who was considered to be an expert on cow science.

During the Krishna's period, he propagated the use of milk products such as curd, butter milk, butter, etc. for gaining body's strength. The scientific value of these products have been proved now. The butter milk and curd are considered good probiotic agents which are used to cure and prevent various gastrointestinal tract infections. These products now also known as to have immunomodulatory properties. Recently during May 2005, the cow urine has been granted US Patent for its anticancer properties. It indicates the scientific and medicinal value of cow products which were known at that time also (around 5000 years ago). However, the use of allopathic medicines that too indiscriminately and unjudiciously has created several problems in man. Many antibiotic and other drugs are banned due to their side effects. Ciproploxacin, a high profile antibiotic drug used now a days has been known to cause damage in tendon and may thus, lead to lameness. Similarly, many other allopathic drugs are declared harmful not only to animals and man but also to be environment. One such example is diclofenac which is harmful to vultures also.

The idea to start this journal during last year was to popularize the cow science and cow products for better human health and environment. A large number of letters, phone calls, Emails, etc. are received by the Editor from different corners of the country appreciating the efforts in binging out this journal. In my opinion, the basic objective of the journal is meeting the requirements of public and the editorial and publication team feel satisfied with this endeavour. In future also this dedicated team will try its best to provide the newer knowledge of this field to its readers. In this issue, the US Patent of cow urine as anticancer is an attractive scientific information to the readers.
