Abstract

Open weave Jute Geotextiles (JGT), commonly known as ‘soil-saver’, has been in use for controlling surficial soil erosion for the last several decades. The primary advantage is its eco-congruity. But it also renders technical advantages. JGT can reduce run-off velocity, control migration of detached soil particles besides facilitating vegetation growth. The type selected for use in the field depends on intensity of rainfall, soil type, especially its hydraulic conductivity and slope inclination. Despite its proven effectiveness in controlling surficial soil erosion, it is felt that the conventional ‘soil-saver’ can be improved functionally as well as economically

With this in view, several types of open weave JGT have been designed and developed. This paper brings out the comparative technical and financial advantages of the new designs after field trials.
